In the early days of fluid lubricated bearings, circular journal bearings were designed and applied simply for the purpose of supporting the shaft load. However, as shafts gradually became larger and higher output was achieved, various types of journal bearings (elliptical bearings, tilting pad bearings, etc.) were developed and applied in the design to secure the dynamic stability of the shaft-bearing system.
